My Baby Wearing Journey

Hi my name is Amie I am a babywearing consultant and I run Slings by the Sea mobile sling library. I am also the sling library coordinator for the NCT sling library in Norwich and Norfolk.

I started babywearing with my first baby Liam in October 2003. I had seen photos of my mum wearing me in a sling and knew it was something I wanted to do. I had no idea how to babywear with my first other than I needed a sling. I didn’t have a clue!

Before giving birth to Liam I inherited a cheap Mothercare turn about sling from my auntie and she showed me how to put it on. I tried Liam in it, he was a very heavy baby and the sling was very uncomfortable, I wasn’t very good at putting it on and struggled to use it. I gave up babywearing him at about 4 months because I didn’t know how to carry him comfortably. I had seen my auntie using the same sling in the past with no problems although her baby was a preemie and I presumed it was just because my baby was big.

When I had my second baby Jack I still wanted to babywear. There is 16 months between my first two boys so a sling sounded like the perfect solution, I could carry one in a sling and push the other in his
stroller. I looked at a different sling that my friend had. Again she had no trouble using it and it looked a lot more comfortable than my last one and she kindly let me have it. It was a Tomy comfort sling with
a lovely lumbar support that my last sling didn’t have and was a lot more adjustable.  It looked so stylish, lots of parents at the time had these, I thought this was the answer however it was still uncomfortable
for long walks as Jack grew and I hardly used it.

With baby number three, Bryony, I still wanted to babywear. I thought if mum could do it all them years ago so could I! I was given yet another sling, the Tomy one again, in a nicer colour and slightly more updated. I persevered, I was uncomfortable, sweaty and annoyed but I occasionally wore her in the sling on walks where we couldn’t take the pram. I saw a video online of someone making a sling from a piece of fabric and my mum, who loved to sew, helped my cut a length of old bed sheet up. I managed to wrap Bryony in her homemade sling however I found it difficult and gave up after a couple of attempts. I was still at an incompetent level and later bought her a good quality framed backpack carrier which we used a lot until the age of three. We walked everywhere with that backpack and she loved being able to see the world going by! I liked that I could take all of her belongings with us in the handy storage pouch too. it really was a great solution but still not the best for wandering round the shops because it was so bulky on my back.

11 years later I had baby number 4, Thomas, this is when things changed a lot. I did lots of online research. I had seen other mums at the school with their babies in stretchy wraps and knew I had to try wrapping again. My partner had also seen a binbag full of baby slings in an auction of airport lost luggage and brought it home. I watched lots of youtube videos on wrapping and asked a friend who regularly used her stretchy to show me what to do. This is where I was learning what worked for me. I was happy and confident carrying Thomas. I had such a wide variety of slings to try and quickly mastered how to use them all properly.

In the first covid lockdown I gave up work as an MOT tester and service techician in a busy garage and re trained as a babywearing consultant. I opened Slings by the Sea and focused my time on Thomas,  babywearing and my new ambition. I recognised there was a real need for a sling library especially for parents living on the coast.

Now when it comes to babywearing Thomas I know how to get us both safe and comfortable. Friends have seen me wearing him with ease and started asking me for advice because they are where I was a few
years ago. To me the way I babywear seems so natural and I am passionate about educating other parents/carers.

As a facilitator I am able to pass on the knowledge and skills that I already have to help people. Babywearing is such a vital parenting tool and makes all manor of tasks easier. I can help parents, show where they are perhaps struggling/going wrong and empathize with them because of my journey. I can show then how to carry safely and comfortably for both parent and baby and highlight why babywearing is so beneficial.

Thank you for taking the time to read through my personal babywearing journey and I wish you all the best with yours.
