The positive effects for babies being carried in slings/carriers

There are many benefits of babywearing especially for babies, in the next few paragraphs I will discuss a few.

By carrying your baby in a sling or carrier it offers comfort and security. Your baby will feel happy that you are close and relax more. This promotes bonding and oxytocin (the happy hormone) is released. It promotes secure attachment and creates a healthy relationship with parents or carers which will enable them to be able to build strong relationships in the future. It helps to regulate their heart rate, temperature and breathing. Babywearing can increase the growth of premature babies too.

When babies are born they find it difficult to adjust to the outside world straight away and prefer a womb like environment, referred to as the fourth trimester, by babywearing you can create this so that they feel calm and cry less. It can help to develop healthy sleep cycles and by allowing your baby to nap in the sling/carrier it can aid sleep.

Babywearing can help baby to breastfeed easier, natural instincts kick in and babies tend to root for the breast if they are hungry, the mothers milk supply is boosted by having baby close. By having baby close their feeding cues are normally picked up on quicker and they can be fed in the sling/carrier as long as they are repositioned in a secure upright position afterwards.

If your baby suffers with wind, colic or reflux spending time in a sling or baby carrier can alleviate these symptoms. Baby will be more comfortable in an upright position and more settled over longer
periods of time.
Babywearing can replace tummy time. Some babies don’t like spending time on their tummy on the floor and tend to cry when they are put down on their own however if they are worn in a sling/carrier they are happier. Babywearing improves the baby’s core muscle strength and helps with their head control especially in the early weeks.

Babywearing can help with the development of your baby’s balance system, their sense of smell and their speech. Your baby will learn to communicate quicker.

By wearing your baby you are more likely to interact with them so that they become more involved and included in what is going on around them.

When out and about they are less likely to become exposed to environmental toxins and pollution if they are being carried because they are high up from the ground (and traffic) and usually facing inwards.

To summarise carrying your baby in a sling or carrier is very beneficial
and absolutely amazing for babies!
